Newsflash!

17 Jan

Okay, so you never know what a day will bring, do you?

In the midst of all of the Minnesota Moments excitement last week, I received an e-mail from the local newspaper – the Daily Globe – asking me to be a part of their Area Voices blogging world!

Wasn’t that nice?

I didn’t have to think about it too much before I said, “Sure! What do I have to do?”

Well, I have to start a second blog! This new venture – The View From my Window – which you can find as of today at http://www.theviewfrommywindow.areavoices.com – does not mean that this blog will look any different or be posted any less frequently! The two blogs will be much the same in style, though the new one will probably consist of more local topics. There may be times that I “re-work” posts from here at “Epiphany” that you might have already seen in the past but that I’ve worked on and made better than ever! Ha.

So why, if it’s not going to be that much different, am I starting a second blog? Mostly because they asked me to, which was an honor! But also because this gives me a new way to be heard/seen/read/enjoyed by a very large number of Upper Midwest Newspaper readers – the Area Voices blogs come from all over the region, not just my little town. In addition, if I’m particularly applicable and/or fabulous, they might print me in the paper…which would be fun and gratifying to be sure.

SO…please check out The View From my Window! I’d love your you to follow me there as well, if you’re willing! (Get to the link from the blogroll at the right!)

I’ll see you there!

Oh, I totally will! Fun! I love this picture, too – the berries were all wrinkly and old but they still were red!

    HOW EXCITING!!!

Gretchen, congrats! I just checked out your new blog and left a comment. This is fantastic.

Interestingly enough, I received an e-mail yesterday from an editor in my home area inviting me to join a similar blogger feature highlighting bloggers from southwestern Minnesota or those with ties to the area. He, however, did not ask me to start a new blog. Instead he requested two posts a week summarizing my existing Minnesota Prairie Roots blog content. I’m still awaiting details on exactly what he expects.

Anyway, this is great news for you and I’m glad that you’re being recognized for your writing talent by the folks in your region. You deserve it.

Interesting and how nice to have been asked! Honestly, it’s probably easier to summarize than to have a new one…( though it’s posting the pictures that seems to take so long!) I hope that turns out to be a great thing for you.

Thanks for your kind words – I think it will be fun!

I totally agree that the images consume the most blogging time. However, photos are essential to a visually-appealing and interesting blog. So they are well worth it. Lucky for me, I love photography. Even though I don’t know all of the technical stuff, I seem to have the artsy, creative side down pat. The more I shoot photos, the more I learn and the more confident I become.

My Dad used to be a semi-professional photographer, complete with a dark room in our house on Orcas Island – so I’ve got a good “hand-me-down” camera from him…which I’m not fully able to understand! But yes, I enjoy taking the photos for sure – though I’m not good at people shots.

Congratulations! How cool is that! Could the new blog have it’s postings on another day so I can look forward to that morning also? 🙂

    • Gretchen O'Donnell January 17, 2012 at 11:55 am #

Well, now that’s a thought! I’ll probably actually post more often there – at least that’s what I’m thinking…

Wow! Congratulations Gretchen. That is an honour indeed. I’ve very excited for you. I’m sure they will print you in the paper and that would be a big thrill. I think though, that your 2012 is going to be VERY busy. But I know you’ll love it. I love the photo of red berries in the snow. What type of plant is that? And I’m off now to click on your new blog. xx

    • Gretchen O'Donnell January 17, 2012 at 5:26 pm #

Thank you so much! It’s so nice to have my blogger friends be excited for me! Yes…I’m slightly afraid of the busyness…hopefully it won’t be too stressful.

I’m honestly not sure what that bush is…it was planted at our previous house by the previous owners – I loved it, but it was small and struggling. I love the red against the white…

Thanks for checking out the new blog!

Wowee Wow Gretchen. That is so great!! I went and signed up to get the posts at your new blog. I think it is just wonderful you got invited to create a new blog and I look forward to following you in both places. All the best,
    Ruth in Pittsburgh

    • Gretchen O'Donnell January 17, 2012 at 5:29 pm #

Thank you! And thanks for signing up for it! It was great to be asked!

I didn’t realize you are in Pittsburgh…I sure didn’t see much of it, though my parents lived there for about 4 years or something like that – I was newly married back then and work schedules etc. didn’t allow us to visit too much, but I enjoyed what I saw of it!

Congrats on the new gig! Off to check out your 2nd blog! 2012 is a great year 🙂 Great photo, BTW. Love snow!

  9. Christina January 19, 2012 at 8:53 am #

How awesome! Good luck with your second blog! 🙂

  10. hotlyspiced January 19, 2012 at 5:32 pm #

Testing, testing. No problem here. Your comment section is one of the best. I don’t even have to put my details in and there’s no code to copy and spam protector stuff so BRILLIANT! Just how I like it. And having said that, I hope mine is user friendly – I’ve never checked!

    • Gretchen O'Donnell January 19, 2012 at 8:07 pm #

Awesome! I’m so glad. And yours is lovely, too – yes, I hate those where you have to do the code thing. Such a bother. Thanks for letting me know!!

I guess I’m having problems with the new blog and the subscriber buttons…hopefully I’ll be able to sort that out soon.

Thanks again so much for “Tagging” me! I’m looking forward to responding to the questions!

Congratulations on the new blog! I have two blogs too, but I can’t reveal the other because it is a “professional” blog. Wouldn’t want those two worlds colliding! Anyway, great pics on both posts!

    • Gretchen O'Donnell January 20, 2012 at 7:50 am #

Thank you and your comments made me laugh! Yes, it’s nice when you can be more annonymous in one blog – the freedom and all. I’m picturing you all serious and wearing a suit in your other blog…with no dog pictures.

I have fun with the pictures though I have a lot to learn!

  12. bitsandbreadcrumbs January 20, 2012 at 10:26 am #

What a nice blog you have, Gretchen, and no wonder you’ve been asked to do another, your writing is so compelling! I love the snow and berries photo…wishing so for snow here. Congratulations to you, and may this be the beginning of lots of published works for you. Now I must go and check out this second blog…

    • Gretchen O'Donnell January 20, 2012 at 11:32 am #

You are so kind, thank you! And thanks for “coming over” to visit! I really am going to have to try that soup recipe you posted – I’ve written “ham hock” on my list already! And, to top it off, the snowplow just came by so I can actually get out of my road!

      • bitsandbreadcrumbs January 20, 2012 at 3:29 pm #

Let me know how you like it! I like ham bones better than hocks, but either will work!

        • Gretchen O'Donnell January 21, 2012 at 9:48 am #

I will! I’ll have to see what I can get a hold of – my husband doesn’t care for ham too much, so ham bones can be hard to come by but I’ll check with the butcher. It’s such soup weather – the perfect time for this recipe!
